(BERLIN, Md.) In this episode of the A&E Report, host Michael Sprouse travels to Berlin, Maryland to visit the "Boho-Farmhouse-Chic" home furnishings and décor shop known as "HOUSE by Salvaged".
Just shy of their first anniversary as of Spring 2018, the husband and wife team of owners Cory and Andrea Canon have filled the lofty and rustic space with unique, superior quality, hand selected, vintage furniture pieces that have been re-purposed with Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan (HOUSE is an official Stockist of the popular brand of decorative paint).
Soon after the Cannons moved into their Berlin home, they developed a Chalk Paint® hobby. "We had been shopping at Salvaged (located in Lewes) for years and finally decided to pick up some paint on a visit. We were familiar with Salvaged because Michelle (co-owner of Salvaged) is a close family friend and we loved decorating our new home with pieces from their shop," said Andrea.
Corey, who was looking for a creative outlet after working in the underground pipeline industry for 9 years in Baltimore, became addicted to repurposing furniture pieces with Chalk Paint® very quickly, and he found it to be very therapeutic.
Both he and Andrea (who worked in the insurance industry for 10 years) were craving a change in their careers and had always dreamed of having their own business.
"Berlin is such an inspiring town to live in and we felt the entrepreneurial spirit all around us," according to Corey. "When we discovered the beautiful building on Artisan's way was available, we felt it was time to jump into action. Michelle had expressed interest in the past about expanding their business to another location. So, we quickly reached out to Michelle to see if they were still interested and the rest of the story is history," he continued.
While Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan can bring beauty back to practically any old piece of furniture in a fun and amazingly easy process (House frequently schedules public workshops and classes), the Canons are selective about the pieces that they repurpose which ultimately end up on the showroom floor of the cozy shop.
"We look for superior quality pieces that just need a little TLC and a chalk paint face lift. It's always amazing how different and beautiful an old piece of furniture will look after the process," said Andrea. "It's always such a fun and creative experience!" Sprouse joins the charismatic and creative team for a look at their attractive store and some insight into their vision of what makes HOUSE so unique and why it's become such a popular interior designed focused shopping destination in downtown, Historic Berlin.
