The Elephant Man - A Second Street Players Production

Updated: Apr 12, 2018 3:50 PM
By Michael Sprouse

In this episode of the A&E Report, host Michael Sprouse gets a behind the curtain look at the Second Street Players' production of "The Elephant Man" which opens Friday, April 13th at 7:00 PM at the Riverview Theatre at 2 South Walnut Street in downtown Milford, Delaware.

The powerful production by Bernard Pomerance is based on the true-life story of Joseph Merrick, who lived in Victorian era London. Merrick - a victim of rare skin and bone diseases - becomes the star freak attraction in traveling sideshows. Found abandoned and helpless, he is admitted to London's Whitechapel Hospital under the care of physician Frederick Treves who introduces him to London society. Merrick slowly evolves from an object of pity to an urbane and witty favorite of the aristocracy and literati, only to be denied his ultimate dream - to become a man like any other.
