Coastal Cuisine Spotlight: Hooked Seafood & Martini Bar, Rehoboth Beach, DE

In this episode of Coastal Cuisine, host Michael Sprouse sits down with “Martini” Tom Garvey—owner and mixologist extraordinaire of Hooked Seafood & Martini Bar located in the Midway Shopping Center at 18585 Coastal Hwy in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware—for a bar side seat and a first hand look at why his finely-tuned craft of mixing the perfect martini has made Hooked a DelMarVa favorite since he opened the unique restaurant six years ago.

Tom is a gregarious, friendly man and when he’s behind the bar mixing up one of his famous concoctions, it’s easy to see why Hooked has such a dedicated following. Garvey has been doing this “his whole career” he told Sprouse. “It makes me feel great when I see the smiles on people’s faces after they’ve had a sip of one of our specialties,” he added.

Whether they try Tom’s signature Martini, “The Garvey” (a perfectly mixed combination of Stoli Orange, Grand Marnier, Chambord, pineapple and orange juice), or Tito’s Dirty Martini featuring Tito’s handmade vodka and house stuffed Bleu Cheese olives, patrons know they are in for something special when Tom fills the glass.

Each of Tom’s Martinis, by the way, conveniently are served with its own shaker for topping of the cocktail on your own speed.

“Many folks don’t realize it, but it’s very easy to mess up a martini. Too much of a certain ingredient or too little can make a big difference in the taste,” Garvey told Sprouse.

The selection for Sprouse during the filming of the episode was the Pear Kami Kazi which offers a delicious blend of Absolut Pear Vodka, triple sec and lime juice. “The first time I had this martini a few years ago,” Sprouse said. “It instantly became a favorite. It’s not too sweet, not too bitter. It tastes like you’ve just taken a bite of the perfect green pear on a summer day, only it’s served in a glass.”

But fantastic Martinis aren’t the only reason locals and visitors alike come to Hooked. The recently revamped menu offers diners some mouth-watering and delicious choices prepared by Hooked’s Executive Chef, Joe Garvey.

The last name is no coincidence. Joe is Tom’s older brother and he’s just as charismatic as Tom. Hooked Seafood & Martini Bar is a family business and even Tom’s son Tyler - who has been trained in mixology by his father - has turns behind the unique and beautiful crescent shaped bar.

The entrees that were featured during the filming were truly top-notch. Starting with a mouth-water appetizer called Danata—which, according to Tom, is an Italian Stromboli and his grandmother’s recipe now recreated by Joe—to the main course of a Surf and Turf which features a hefty portion of two fillets and two eight-ounce cold water lobster tails broiled to perfection, each dish sampled reflected Joe’s expertise in the kitchen.

Another new menu item standout is the Bacon Wrapped Shrimp served with a delectable aioli sauce and a perfectly sized appetizer portion of crab mac and cheese nestled in a crisp bacon cup.

But if that weren’t enough, the desserts that Joe highlighted on camera were like a joy ride through a sweet tooth’s version of fantasyland. “Each are made in house by Joe and the pastry chef and they are amazing to behold,” Sprouse said.

From the homemade Peanut Cheesecake topped with Chocolate Ganache to their Crème Brule (which features a new flavor daily) the display was as delicious as it was impressive.

Hooked Martini and Seafood Restaurant also features live entertainment and has been a regular performance venue for one of the Mid-Atlantic’s favorite entertainers Bryan Clark (who was recently featured in an episode of The Arts & Entertainment Report). “Bryan has a regular gig here practically every Saturday,” said Tom.

With Tom behind the bar, Joe in the kitchen and Bryan on stage – it’s easy to see why so many people are getting “hooked” on Hooked Seafood & Martini Bar.
