(MILFORD, Del.) – The Easter Bunny came early this year, making it an “egg-citing” day for many pups on Saturday.
On Saturday, March 24, Fur Baby Boutique hosted its annual Easter egg hunt and costume contest for dogs.
“This is our 7th annual Easter Egg Hunt and costume contest and adoption day,” explained Sherry Shupe, owner of Fur Baby Boutique. “What we do is come next door to our beautiful park in downtown Milford. They’re going to hunt over a thousand eggs that we have filled with gourmet Fruitable Pet Food treats.”
Shupe says this year’s egg hunt included more than 45 hunters and about two dozen costume contest entries. She says there are two reasons for hosting the event every year:
"One - it’s a great time. The dogs get to use their nose for scent work. All the eggs are filled with gourmet treats, so they can smell them, smush the Easter eggs, and get the treats outside. It allows them to use their natural instincts,” said Shupe. “It’s great to socialize, to see a bunch of distractions, a bunch of dogs, a bunch of noises… we’re outside at the park, there’s ducks, there’s geese, there’s people, so it’s really good socialization for the animals, as well. And then the big thing is that we’re raising funds for the local nonprofit, Brandywine Valley SPCA."
Fur Baby Boutique raised $300 for Brandywine Valley SPCA. Meg Searcey of BVSPCA says the donations will help them save more animals.
“We’re always bringing in dogs from Florida and things and so it helps in the sense of operations and keeping these guys healthy and happy and feeding them,” said Searcey.
