(DEWEY BEACH, Del.) - Dewey Beach has been looking into hiring a consultant to oversee the police department since 2017. At that time they didn't have a town manager and weren't able to move forward. Now they find themselves entering 2019 with that position filled so the proposal can finally be reviewed.
In a special meeting on January 21st, 2019, commissioners voted to let the town manager use up to $25,000 to hire the best possible consultant.
Commissioner Paul Bauer explains, "It really deals in how the policy with what's the best practice the police should do, how are we handling things from an administrative standpoint."
"He would produce a report saying to the commissioners this is what could be done and then also he's available for consultation if the police have any issue and are unsure of what to do, they could call him up and there's a certain number of hours a month they would get advice from him," adds Commissioner David Moscowitz.
The town manager will review the proposal immediately and if the police consultant is acceptable, they will be implemented right away.
