LEWES, Del - A man was rescued from a sailboat that washed ashore at Cape Henlopen State Park near Fort Miles on Monday morning. The Lewes Fire Department were dispatched at around 10 a.m. for a man who possibly suffered a stroke and was trapped inside the boat.
When they arrived, the boat (named the Maritime out of Lewes) was being tossed about in the waves, preventing any rescue attempt. A bulldozer was brought to the beach and a line from the bulldozer helped keep the boat upright and allow the rescue to begin. The man was alert and in constant contact with the first responders. The fire department reported he was in stable condition prior to transportation to Beebee Healthcare in Lewes.
A tugboat is expected to arrive at the scene later in the afternoon to determine if the Maritime could be pulled to harbor. If not the boat would have to pulled on-shore, loaded on a trailer, and transported on land. The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control is investigation how the Maritime ended up ashore.
