(SALISBURY, MD.)- Jermichael Mitchell loves helping the community and has been doing his part for more than 10 years. Mitchell said an individual can gain empowerment through sports.
"People learn leadership skills and learn things as far as taking advantage of the good coaching and the good men that we put in their lives and a lot of us teach different sports like football, basketball," said Mitchell.
Mitchell has not had a place to hold his basketball camps since August.
With the help of Mayor Jake day and the Salisbury Community Center that changed.
"We wanted to create an opportunity for the programming that existed there that organizations have run for years to give it a home," said Day.
Mitchell can now run his programs like Kids ROC and Lady Rock Youth Programs beginning Monday starting at 5:30. His programs are free for all kids.
"It gives them something to look forward too and keeps them out of the streets and when the most of the time we are open they would be in their neighborhoods so we try to take those hours and utilize those activities and keep them positive," said Mitchell.
Mayor Day said communities centers are good things for the city and plans for more the future.
"This is the first of several places that the community intends to create for youth development programming in neighborhoods with young people around the city," said Day.
