WORLD OF SPORTS-WATER SAFETY

(DELMARVA) -When people are here for the summer they'll be enjoying time in the water.
Owner Of Island Watersports Mike Ferrari said it can get very crowded out in the water.

"Just from my experience in being in the water, it's the equivalent to a full parking lot at a football game," said Ferrari."There's traffic everywhere, boats are constantly moving in every direction, especially out on the open bay so it's where you've got to have your head on a swivel and keep an eye out for other boaters out there."

Dr. Nicholas Perchiniak with Beebe Health Care said that water sports have crept up the list of causes for head injuries.

"I think classically people think of football and cycling and ice hockey and those types of contact sports, but we see especially with jet skiing and wake to board with those things where there's a risk of injury with a machine or the board," said Perchiniak.

Ferrari said everyone that rides a jet ski at Island Watersports will have an instructor go over the rules of the water.

"Before anybody goes out on a rental boat, rent a jet ski, any sort of vessel from our marina, there's about a 15-minute brief that they're given and that's going to incorporate all the local rules that we have, the operation of the vessels, and what to expect out on the water,"said Ferrari. "We also send guides out there to act almost like a babysitter or lifeguards, just in case there is a problem. We're quick and able to respond to that and able to help everybody."
