(OCEAN PINES, MD.) -Jeremy Goetzinger is training 5 days a week and goes about 17 miles every day.He is preparing for the Marine Corps Marathon in October and the New York City Marathon that happens in November.
"It helps me have a sense of achievement to accomplish something that a small percentage of the country attempts to do with competing in races and marathons," said Goetzinger.
During training sessions he burns 800 to 900 calories. The remarkable thing is he is using his hands to cycle. He is an amputee with no legs.
Mark Flounlacker is an Ocean Pines neighbor and is a disabled athlete. He has a spinal injury but can use his legs. Flounlacker said Jeremy has given him some encouragement and advice.
"I know Jeremy will be there and say let's go for a ride and let's do something and that is super important because you go through ups and downs and it is nice to have people understand what you are going through even though it is not the same injury we get it,"said Flounlacker.
