(SALISBURY, Md.) - Students in one Salisbury neighborhood will have a new place to visit pretty soon.

The city will open a community center at the house located at 306 Newton Street near the Camden Community Garden. The center will offer after school, weekend, and summer programs and activities.

This is part of a larger effort to open community centers in neighborhoods with a higher concentration of young people and juvenile arrests, as well as a lack of walkable access to after school programs.

Parents and neighbors are hopeful that this new center will have a positive impact.

"If there's a lot of activities for children around here then they can stay busy and stay out of trouble," says Christopher Haynes of Salisbury."

Mayor Jake Day says work to renovate the house will begin within 30 days. The hope is to have the new community center open by the beginning of the new school year in Salisbury.
