Chincoteague Welcomes First-Ever Maui Jack's Water Park
Years in the making, Maui Jack's water park offers something for the whole family.
"There are no water parks on the eastern shore of Virginia except for this one right here," said the park's architect Michael O'Neill of Water Parks Consulting, LLC.
"Basically we built it for the town of Chincoteague, for Accomack county, Pocomoke and Salisbury. It's probably the best water park on the Eastern Shore."
Set on five acres of land, Maui Jack's features several water slides, a kiddie pool area, cabanas and shaded areas, as well as a lazy river that winds throughout the park.
The park's owners and developers, Jack and Todd Burbage of Blue Water Development, said there was a strong need to build Maui Jack's in Chincoteague in order to serve both locals and tourists, namely campers.
"We were thinking that Chincoteague could really use a water park, they need something for the kids to do during the summer. All the locals would really enjoy a waterpark. So when we did it, we decided to do it right," said Jack Burbage.
"We made a commitment to ourselves that we would hire all local," Todd Burbage added. "So we've actually hired 30 to 35 local kids in this community, and what a great summertime job."
Chincoteague town leaders said Maui Jack's will be a game-changer for tourism.
"They call it glamping now instead of camping but I think this will definitely bring the glampers here," said town council member Gene Taylor, referring to the campground located next to the water park.
"It's a higher rent of camping and I believe this is going to be great for our tax base. I'd be surprised if it isn't."
Kids at the park Friday afternoon who traveled all the way from Wicomico county said it's great to have another option for a water park on Delmarva.
"It's cool because we have to drive like far away, so we got to come down here for a little bit and for a surprise," said Mackenzie Medford of Delmar.
Ticket prices start at $22.99 and range from one to three day passes as well as season passes.
Maui Jack's is open from 10am-6pm seven days a week through Labor Day, and on weekends only through mid-September.
