Brandywine Valley SPCA Shows Big Love for Valentine's Day
""Our average length of stay is 14 or 15 days. That's for everything in the population, but it would be significantly higher for large dogs," says Brandywine Valley SPCA Operations Manager Chris Farrall.
Farrall says they wants to draw attention to these large dogs with a Valentine's promotion. "The promotion is called "Big Love" It's a lot of big dogs with a lot of love to give. They just want to spend the holiday curled up with you. Everyone needs another Valentine even if you have one," he explains.
The special adoption rate even matches the date of the holiday. Large dogs normally cost $100-$250, but their fee has been reduced down to just $14 now through February 17th. The adoption fee covers the cost of spaying, micro-chipping, and vaccinating the animal.
This Valentine's deal applies to all dogs that are over a year old and way more than 40 pounds.
The first to be adopted during the promotion is two-year-old Millie.
"She is my new Valentine, absolutely," says new owner Marisol Mertz.
Millie has been at the SPCA since November. She's eager to go with Marisol to her new home in Rehoboth Beach. "I have a grandson which is my son's dog. His name is Luke. He's a golden retriever. He's 7-years-old and he comes and goes to his father and back to me so Millie's going to have an instant brother," she explains.
Marisol says this adoption has been a long time coming. "It's been a while since I had to put my last one down and I wanted for the first time to experience adoption because I know that a lot of dogs need homes."
Millie has found her new love in time for Valentines Day, but she has plenty of friends at the Georgetown campus still looking for theirs.
