(REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.) - Rehoboth Beach Veterans Appreciation Weekend is kicking off a bit differently for its 2nd year. The primary reason for this 4-day event is to thank those who have served.

An inaugural 5K kicks off at the Ale House on Wilmington Avenue. Walkers and runners take their mark up the street on the boardwalk for the first ever Run 4 The Vets. This race launches this year's Rehoboth Beach Veterans Appreciation Weekend.

Rehoboth Beach Main Street coordinates this weekend and the 5K. Executive Director, Karen Falk, explains what the non-profit is all about. "Our idea is to bring vitality to downtown Rehoboth Beach. Not only do we work with the businesses, but we also work with the residents."

Run 4 the Vets is made up of an out and back course down the boardwalk. In addition to thanking our veterans, this event is also raises funds for two non-profit organizations.

Falk explains, "It's a fundraiser for the Rehoboth Beach VFW post 7447 and part of the proceeds do go to Rehoboth Beach Main Street. We are a non-profit as well."

Senior Vice Commander at the VFW, Richard Bardy, explains, "We take the proceeds from that and we support various organizations, not just those at the VFW but local agencies that need assistance at any particular time. Our main thing is our home for children that the VFW supports as well as our national relief fund and our post relief fund for veterans who have an immediate need."

In addition to this 5K, donations can also be made directly to the post itself. Members of the VFW say they're always recruiting and they're especially hoping to encourage some younger veterans to join.

Mayor Kuhns sees a lasting impact from Run 4 the Vets and Veterans Appreciation Weekend as a whole.

"It brings a lot of people here for the weekend, especially on a beautiful weekend like this but it's important for us to recognize the work of the veterans and the veterans weekend."

Veterans Appreciation Weekend Runs beyond the 5K. Many stores throughout town are offering military discounts and treats for veterans.
