(GEORGETOWN, Del.) -The number of applicants applying to become police officers with the Georgetown Police Department are decreasing.

"Here in the southern Georgetown and particular in small law enforcement agencies we are having trouble having troubles recruiting folks to become interested in a law enforcement career and there are numerous challenges like salaries, but another part is some are not interested in Law enforcement."

Hughes said he is seeking those who are normally not represented in law enforcement like women and minority candidates so he tries to recruit across the board.

"l like to see folks that who have that real desire to work in a municipal agency," said Hughes. "We do a lot of community engagement and every day you are engaged with your constituent that we serve every day and it takes a special police officer or officers to do that and so in order to find those qualified candidates we need to engage the community more."
