Suspected Drunk Driver Crashes, Causes Fire in Milton
The incident occurred around 5:00 a.m. this morning, Sunday September 20, 2015, as Michael B. Fitzpatrick, 25 of Cape May Court House, New Jersey, was operating a 2007 Ford F150 pickup truck northbound on Union Street Extended (SR5) approaching Coastal Highway (SR1). The truck crossed both the southbound and northbound lanes of SR1 and entered the property located at 25532 Brumbley Place, Brumbley's Family Park, where it initially struck two tree stumps, a decorative rock, and continued in a northeasterly direction striking a large tree before coming to a stop. The truck then caught fire, catching the tree on fire, as well as causing heat damage to the occupied residence located on the property.
Within five minutes of the 9-1-1 call, a trooper arrived at the scene and observed the driver still inside the vehicle unconscious and laying across the front seat. Due to the doors being locked, the trooper broke out the driver's side window with a divisionally issued axe and upon entering, was able to wake the driver and pull him from the burning truck.
Michael Fitzpatrick was removed from the scene by EMS and transported to Bayhealth Milford Memorial where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. He was cited for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.
Milton Fire Department responded to the scene to extinguish the fire. There were no injuries to the occupants of the house and no structural damage to the residence.
