Updated: Driver Dies Following Millsboro Crash
MILLSBORO, Del.- Delaware State Police Collision say one of the drivers injured in a three-vehicle crash in Millsboro has died.
Troopers on Friday afternoon identified the victim as 79-year-old Gene E. Crone, of Rehoboth Beach.
Police said the incident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday, when a 2019 Subaru Ascent was traveling southbound on Indian Mission Road (SR 5) just north of John J. Williams Highway ( SR 24). Troopers said that meantime, a 2000 Ford Explorer was traveling northbound on SR 5 and approaching the Subaru. A 2011 Audi Q5 was traveling northbound behind the Explorer.
Police said that for unknown reasons, the operator of the Subaru allowed his vehicle to cross the center line and enter the northbound travel lane in front of the Explorer. The operator of the Explorer attempted to swerve his vehicle to the right to avoid the impact but was unsuccessful. As a result, the Subaru struck the Explorer. The front of the Audi then struck the rear of the Explorer within the northbound travel lane, according to police.
Police said the operator of the Subaru, a 66-year-old Millsboro man, was properly restrained. He was transported to the Beebe Medical Center where he was treated for minor non-life-threatening injuries and released.
Investigators said the operator of the Explorer, identified as Crone, was not properly restrained and was transported to Christiana Hospital where he was in critical condition before succumbing to his injuries.
The operator of the Audi, a 58-year-old Millsboro woman, was properly restrained and declined medical treatment at the scene, police said.
SR 5 was closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
