SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- Hurricane Dorian has already made an impact on Delmarva. The high school football season opening game between Milford and Indian River has been moved from Friday night to a Thursday 7 p.m. kickoff. Despite playing their home games on a natural surface, the field condition was not the determining factor for the change.
"People driving to and from the game people (especially) driving from Milford, which is a fairly long, had more to do with it," Indian River School District Communications Specialist David Maull explained.
Another Maull who is waiting to see what Friday's weather brings is Cape Henlopen Head Football Coach JD Maull.  He is about to begin his second season with the Vikings.  Cape's season opener is against St. George's. Before taking the Vikings head position prior to last season, Maull was the first football coach in the history of the St. George's program. During a ten season career with the Seahawks, Maull compiled a 75-37 record which included two trips to the Delaware Division II State Championship Game.
"The mindset of a (high school) football player is you want to play on Friday night," Maull said. "I do understand the safety reasons for the school and for the fans if they decide to back up the game to Saturday."
Cape plays their home games on a synthetic turf.  That surface generally drains better and is not damaged the way a grass field is during rainy weather.  Like Indian River, the field at Cape is not the top concern when making the decision to postpone.
"The big factors are the safety of the players, safety of the fans getting in and out of the stadium, and making sure the players are not more susceptible to injuries," Cape Athletic Director Robert Cilento said.
If the date of the game is changed, the Cape Henlopen marching band will likely not perform the halftime show they have been practicing for three weeks. Band Director Chris Burkhart will attempt to put together a pep band, made up of members who did not have a scheduling conflict, to play during the game at a new date and time.
