Five Points Roundabout

According to DelDOT's plans, the roundabout was expected to be open to traffic in March. However, consistent and heavy rainfall is what DelDOT attributes to the delayed opening.

LEWES, Del. — DelDOT says the Plantation Road/Beaver Dam Road Roundabout is partially open to traffic effective Friday, April 19.

Drivers can now travel through the roundabout between Plantation Road and Beaver Dam Road and exit to Henlopen Landing.

The roundabout's connection to the Route 9 intersection is slated to open in May. The Plantation Road improvements project commenced in February 2023.

The roundabout's opening was delayed after wet weather. Eliza Kimmey, who works in Rehoboth Beach is glad traffic from the construction can finally lighten up.

"The end is near, the end is in sight," Kimmey says. "I hope that fixes a lot of things. I know traffic in Rehoboth and Lewes it just gets insane, so I'm just hoping that with the circle being built, that it'll actually do something about it."

Once the roundabout is fully open to traffic, DelDOT's website said the next step is to complete the connector from the circle to Route 9, which should happen in May.

"I think it's going to be a good thing that it's open because like with traffic and everything, it's just been building up recently, so especially with summertime, you know, traffic just gets worse and worse, so I think it'll be really beneficial," Kimmey says.

The new roundabout is located near the Lowes and Henlopen Landing neighborhood. DelDOT says the roundabout will help traffic at the notoriously backed-up intersection of Beaver Dam, Route Nine, and Plantation Road. It's one of multiple roundabouts DelDOT has constructed or plans to in Sussex County, and one part of the longterm improvements to the Five Points intersection.
