LEWES, Del. - A three car crash on Route 9 Wednesday afternoon sent two people to the hospital. It happened just after 3 p.m.

According to Delaware State Police, a car traveling west attempted to pass another when it swiped it, causing the passing car to enter the eastbound lane and collide head-on with a third oncoming car.

The driver of the oncoming car was a 63-year-old who was transported to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the passing car was a 24-year-old man who was airlifted to an area hospital for injuries to his head and lower body. The driver of the car being passed was not injured.

Police say that, upon his release from the hospital, the 24-year-old will be issued charges for careless driving, failure to remain within a single lane, failure to drive in the proper lane and direction, no insurance identification, no registration card, and not wearing a seatbelt.
