The Philippine president says his government will enforce a “countermeasure package” in response to “aggressive and dangerous attacks” by the Chinese coast guard and suspected militia ships in the disputed South China Sea. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. did not provide details of the actions his government will take but said these will be proportionate to what he called the "illegal, coercive, aggressive and dangerous attacks by agents of the China coast guard and Chinese maritime militia.” His warning is the latest sign of the escalating disputes between China and the Philippines in the contested waters, where there have been minor collisions between the coast guard and other vessels of the rival claimant nations.

Former crypto mogul Sam Bankman-Fried faces the potential of decades in prison when he is sentenced for his role in the 2022 collapse of FTX. The company was once one of the world’s most popular platforms for trading digital currency. Bankman-Fried was convicted in November of fraud and conspiracy and will be sentenced Thursday. That's a dramatic fall from a year earlier when he and his companies were riding high with a Super Bowl advertisement and celebrity endorsements. A jury found that Bankman-Fried illegally used money from FTX depositors to cover his expenses. His lawyers say he is not the “evil genius” depicted in the media.

Authorities say Russia has fired salvoes of drones and missiles overnight at southern and eastern regions of Ukraine, injuring more than a dozen people as the Kremlin’s forces persevered with attritional attacks designed to wear down Ukrainian defenses. Ukraine’s air force said air defense systems intercepted 26 out of 28 Shahed drones. Russian forces also launched five missiles overnight. The regular bombardment of Ukraine by the Kremlin’s forces has recently gained momentum, with missile barrages of the capital Kyiv and strikes on energy facilities across the country. The attacks also aim to weaken Ukrainian morale and act as retribution for Ukrainian long-range strikes on Russian soil.

U.S. federal agencies must show that their artificial intelligence tools aren’t harming the public, or stop using them, under new rules unveiled by the White House. Vice President Kamala Harris says government agencies that use AI tools will be required to verify that those tools do not endanger the rights and safety of the American people. After Thursday's announcement, each agency by December must have a set of concrete safeguards that guide everything from facial recognition screenings at airports to AI tools that help control the electric grid or determine mortgages and home insurance.

President Joe Biden is announcing new steps to protect consumers who buy short-term health insurance plans that critics say amount to junk. A new rule finalized by the Democratic president's administration will limit short-term health insurance to just three months. And the plans can only be renewed for a maximum of four months, instead of up to the three years allowed under Biden's predecessor, Republican President Donald Trump. The Biden administration is also requiring short-term plans to provide consumers with clear explanations of the services they cover and how much. The White House says the rule is part of the president's interest in reducing costs for consumers.
