shingle point fire

GEORGETOWN, Del. - A house fire on Shingle Point Rd. Wednesday evening drew a large emergency response. The call came in around 6:30 p.m.

Neighbors nearby told CoastTV News that the house had been for sale. Georgetown Fire Chief Mark Rogers said on Wednesday night that at that time no one was found inside the home and it was believed to be vacant, but he added that firefighters did run into a few challenges on this call.

"It was difficult for the interior crew, had a lot of fire, part of the floor had gave away," Rogers says. "That's always a safety issue when you're sending interior crews in, but there was also a report of possible homeless subjects staying in there, so crews made a quick advance inside to do a search."

Firefighters from multiple agencies responded including Georgetown, Milton, Lewes, Indian River and Millsboro.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
