The Scarier and Sillier the Better, with the New Scarecrow Competition

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- Delmarva is getting spooky! All through October, the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce is hosting its first ever, Scarecrow Competition.

"Something that's artistic, different, a surprise. We want it to catch your eye and make you giggle a little bit," said CEO of the chamber of commerce, Carol Everhart.

It's an adventure traveling around Rehoboth and Dewey Beach, trying to find each one. Everhart says with so many events canceled this season, she wants to keep both towns, spook-tacular.

"Since we wouldn't have Sea Witch we decided we need something fun. This is a walk around thing, so that's very good on a customer base for our businesses, nice for the resident to walk around. The kids like it, the adults like it, what's not to like about this," said Everhart.

The three winning businesses get a Sea Witch memorabilia package full of Sea Witch goodies, including shirts, pins, and even a piece of the old balloon. By each scarecrow is a sign with a number. Head to the chamber of commerce website and cast your vote with the number of the scarecrow you like best.

Clear Space Theater found inspiration in their upcoming musical Carrie, leading them to create the Carrie-crow.

"Our development director and artistic director and other staff came up with the concept and put Carrie together using costuming and blood from the show," said executive director of the theater, Wesley Paulson.

It's not too late to take part in the fun and fright. Businesses have until October 16 to create and compete.

"We lost a lot this year without fireworks and I think the idea the chamber has to create this scarecrow theme is a wonderful way to still bring people to town and have a light, modified version of Sea Witch," said Paulson.

The competition runs until Halloween. The top three winners will be announced November 6.
