The City of Lewes nears final decision on archaeological review component for new developments

LEWES, Del. - The Lewes City Council is opening up the floor for public comment about a proposed addition of an archeological review component to its future development plans.

The Lewes Planning Commission voted in favor of an ordinance in May.

Over the last few years, the city said there has been concern identified regarding archeological significance on lands proposed to be developed within the city.

CoastTV reached out to developers who responded that they hope care is taken by the city to ensure it doesn't stop much-needed housing development from happening in the city.

The current version of the proposed ordinance would require a archeological survey of the land that would be submitted with preliminary plans. It also dictates that work will stop if any archaeological remains are unearthed during the development process and not resumed until further study has been done.

The public can weigh in at a city council meeting at 9 a.m. at city hall. Commissioners will hold a final vote on the ordinance on Oct. 9.Â
